Why Kids Need Sleep

Most adults will tell you that sleep is their best friend--although, for some reason, kids never seem to agree! For many kids, that's just because bedtime is boring or they're not ready to stop playing. But for others, it might be because they don't have a bed to sleep in. Let's take a look at the scientific reasons why kids need a good night's rest (and a safe, comfortable bed, too).

Our Mission: Children Need a Bed of Their Own

I’m not a doctor. I’m not a nurse. I’m not in a medical-related professional of any kind. I didn’t even stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night. That said, before I try to emphasize how important a good night sleep is to a child, let me first state that the thoughts I’m about to share are a mixture of research, opinion, and common sense. Good to have that off my chest. Now let’s get started:

Over the past five years I have helped build over 1,000 beds. I have also personally delivered hundreds of beds to children in need. Many of these children were sleeping on couches, or air mattresses. Many others were sharing beds with parents and multiple siblings. And, unfortunately, many of those children were sleeping directly on the floor. When it comes to the sleeping conditions of children, at this point I feel like I have seen it all.

The Success of Bunks Across America

In 2017, Sleep in Heavenly Peace had about 10 chapters. Thanks to some national exposure from household names like Mike Rowe and CNN, by June of 2018, SHP grew to roughly 40 active chapters. And fast forward to right now, we've grown to become a national organization made up of 150 chapters who are out to solve a national crisis.

On Saturday, June 15th, communities across the country joined SHP and its supporters during our very first national build day and the response has been enormous. To all those who took part in this herculean effort—thank you! It is because of good people like you that SHP will be able to continue to tackle the national problem of bedlessness.

Bunks Across America brought together 108 chapters and 8,534 volunteers in 38 states across the country for one united purpose, to help 5,459 kids off the floor in their town.

You may wonder how SHP uses all the funds we receive from generous donors. Well, simply put, we aren’t like some nonprofits that use 90% for overhead with 10% actually going to the cause. In fact, we’re almost the exact opposite of those other nonprofits.
